INTRODUCTION:

The CITY series were created from our artist Dino Hien’s  vivid memories of each and every city that he has lived in, or  been to.

There are some bustling streets, full of livelihood and human’s dreams. 

There are some silent corners, hiding in the astoundingly peaceful sunset lights,

There are also many uphill streets, overflowing with youthful and courageous vibes.

And yet, there’s a glimmer of sunlight shining upon a dark neighborhood, a perfect blend of reality and illusion to soothe the cumbersome.

Each story and its details are elegantly told by the sublime color harmony in the “CITY” series. 

“CITY” stimulates different aspects of human life, sometimes exciting, adventurous and even reckless, yet sometimes deep, calm and thoughtful. The memory lands he walks in are sometimes blurry but very bold and clear. Humans in the paintings might appear trivial, but everytime they do, many unanswered questions come along with them. You can always look into “CITY” and see your own memories in it!

FORMATIVE STAGE:

It was in the 2000s when the first CITY paintings came into life, meaning that the series has been around for more than 20 years. The number of paintings has been said as “unable to count how many paintings and to remember all the collectors”.  At the beginning, painting cities was Dino Hien’s bread and butter during his college time. It started with only a few orders from local galleries, but no longer after, many foreigners and tourists have come to Hoi An, looking to buy his paintings. Later, CITY series were exhibited abroad in Thailand, Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia, Germany, France, Canada, Sweden, … and for the most part, the USA.

In the year of 2005-2010, CITY was exhibited and sold at the artist’s own gallery; each painting always came with the certificate of origin with Dino’s signature. “Ngõ” gallery was located in the heart of Hoi An city, Vietnam, where he was born and raised. Eventually, everytime people see CITY paintings with this unique style and technique,they see Dino Hien Artist - the father of “CITY” series in contemporary art

At the moment, he is living in Helsinki, where he thinks of as “a new city with a whole new source of energy that can give “CITY” new appearance, new emotions, new hopes and even new colors in every of its seasons. And the only thing that remains constant is his love with painting City!

“CITY” series is now exhibited at Art Together Gallery at Mariankatu 24, 00170 Helsinki. The gallery shares the poetic atmosphere with Papu Cafe, and makes the space even more aesthetic in a very Viet way.
